ICT COMMITTEE INVITES CA AND MOBILE SERVICE PROVIDERS.

COMMUNICATION AUTHORITY INVITED TO SHED LIGHT ON THE INTERNATIONAL GATEWAY TARRIFS.

In a meeting chaired by the Information, Technology and, Communication (ICT) Chairman in the Senate, Hon Allan Chesang, the committee invited the Communication authority (CA) of Kenya and Mobile Service providers. This was for further explanation over the Routing of Gateway Tariffs. This meeting took place in The Parliament building, in the Senate Nairobi.

The Senate committee on ICT led by Trans-Nzoia Senator has resolved to invite the two parties to shed more light. This comes at a time when technology is steadily picking up in our country and right channels ought to be put in place. The members of the committee poked holes in the responses by the Communication Authority and Mobile service providers. Therefore, adding that there’s a need for them to appear before the committee to further explain their responses.

After this meeting, the ICT committee tabled a report on the floor of the house on its activities. They made a statement regarding their activities for the period commencing 4th October 2022 to date. The statement was read by the Chairman of ICT and Trans-Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang. The Senate has been informed by the Chair that, they have held a total of twenty-seven sittings during the period under review. Consequently, the committee considered and concluded three statements that were sought out from it and is currently considering the remaining three. The three statements include the plan by Safaricom Plc to block SIM cards not registered, localization of Digital Data storage and discrimination of KBC towards Eastern indigenous languages. The ICT committee is currently pursuing responses regarding SIM card registration process and statement regarding the management of Media Council of Kenya Funds.

Senator Chesang also informed the House that the committee is currently conducting an inquiry on the Digital Assets Infrastructure in Kenya and will table the report once its concluded. He, Sen Allan Chesang, has said, “in order to ensure that online access to Government Services is available to all, we as a committee intends to conduct fact-finding visits to various counties to establish the extend of coverage of the Fiber Optic Network (NOFBI) to County Headquarters’, County assemblies, Government offices and, primary/secondary schools.”
